How to Patch Small and Medium Holes in Drywall – Easy DIY Guide

Small holes from doorknobs, picture hooks, or accidental bumps are among the most common drywall issues. The good news? You can fix them in under an hour with basic tools and get a seamless, paint-ready finish.

What You'll Need:

  • Joint compound (lightweight spackling for small holes)

  • Putty knife or drywall knife

  • Sandpaper (120-220 grit)

  • Self-adhesive mesh patch or California patch (for medium holes)

  • Primer and matching paint

Step-by-Step Repair:

  1. Clean the Area – Remove any loose debris or old paint around the hole.

  2. For Tiny Holes (Nail/Picture Size) – Apply spackling directly with a putty knife, overfill slightly, and smooth it out.

  3. For Medium Holes (Golf Ball Size or Larger) – Stick a self-adhesive mesh patch over the hole.

  4. Apply First Layer of Compound – Spread joint compound over the patch in thin layers, feathering the edges outward.

  5. Let Dry & Sand – Wait 1-2 hours (or per product instructions), then lightly sand smooth.

  6. Add Additional Coats – Usually 2-3 thin coats total for a pro finish, sanding between each.

  7. Prime & Paint – Prime the repaired area, then paint to match the wall.

Pro Tip: Feather the compound widely (12-18 inches out) to avoid noticeable ridges after painting. With patience, these repairs disappear completely!
