Hairline or wider cracks often appear due to house settling, temperature changes, or minor structural shifts—common in older Evansville homes. A quick fix with the right technique prevents them from returning.
Tools & Materials:
Utility knife
Mesh tape or paper tape
Joint compound
Taping knives (4-6 inch and 10-12 inch)
Sanding sponge/block
Primer/paint
Repair Steps:
Widen the Crack Slightly – Use a utility knife to create a shallow V-shape for better adhesion.
Apply Mesh Tape – Press self-adhesive mesh tape over the crack.
First Coat – Spread a thin layer of compound over the tape, pressing it firmly.
Dry & Second Coat – Let dry fully, then add a wider second coat, feathering edges.
Final Coat & Sand – Apply a third wide coat if needed, then sand smooth once dry.
Finish – Prime and paint the area.
Key Advice: Always use mesh tape for flexibility—it moves with the house and reduces re-cracking. For recurring cracks, consider consulting a pro about underlying foundation issues.
